Iowa to Host Digital Literacy & Wellness Conference

Targeting Youth High-Risk Behavior Reduction

DES MOINES – Peter Komendowski and Dr. Douglas Gentile of Iowa State University announced Iowa will host the Digital Literacy & Wellness Conference on Monday, October 7th, in Ames. The event will feature some of the world’s leaders in digital literacy education, sharing innovations in teaching with Iowa educators, substance abuse prevention, and health professionals.

“This is a great opportunity for Iowa to lead the way with cutting-edge research and teaching tools to strengthen youth by making them more media savvy,” said Dr. Gentile. “The goal of digital literacy is to improve the educational outcomes and behavioral health of Iowa youth. For parents and children, it means minimizing the risks and maximizing the benefits of growing up in this fast-changing digital world.”

The one-day Digital Literacy Conference is being organized by the Partnership for a Healthy Iowa, with support from Iowa State University, the Mayo Clinic, the Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy and others.

“We are talking about what promises to be major innovations in education and behavioral health – risk management for the digital world. From Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) education to the arts and athletics, this conference will address issues directly relevant to managing youth health and welfare,” said Partnership President Peter Komendowski. “Digital Literacy can help address substance abuse, vaping risks, aggression, attention disorders, obesity, poor school performance and other behavioral risks that can be influenced by media interactions.”
