Opinion: A full recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic requires immediate action on the nation’s opioid crisis

The stress, isolation and anxiety brought on by the pandemic have undeniably exacerbated the mental health and addiction crises in Iowa and across the country… Current estimates show that more than 90,000 Americans died from a drug overdose in 2020. Opioids accounted for approximately 67,500 of these deaths, representing a 35% increase in opioid-related overdose deaths in a single year.
